BIO FOR KEVIN SCOTT JOINER

Born in England to American parents. Raised in Florida, the most culturally northern of the southern states. Schooled in the suburbs beyond industrial Tampa, with the swampy wilderness of the Sunshine State a short walk away. A homebody with rambling fever. Scientific in thought and artistic in expression. Musician. Writer. Actor. Kevin Scott Joiner is, like the music he makes, the product of odd juxtapositions.

Having grown up in a musical household, with a GI father who played country music semi-professionally, singing came naturally to Kevin. Somewhere in the attic of his childhood home, there is an old tape featuring him singing a John Denver tune – and doing surprisingly well, considering he was 2 years old and still sporting his English accent. At 13, he received his first guitar. A few days later, it was shoved beneath his bed. There it sat, collecting dust, until Kevin turned 17 and began playing along with a few, musically oriented friends. Already interested in a career in writing, Kevin began writing songs from the moment he could form a handful of chords and at 18, joined his first band. There was no looking back.

Kevin’s feet are planted firmly on traditional forms, while his eyes are always looking for new possibilities. Not surprisingly, his songs and influences fall upon a wildly shifting spectrum. The originals range from raw roots to jazz-infected R&B to jangly power pop, while the interpretive covers run the gamut from Johnny Cash to Prince to Radiohead.

To Kevin, the constant unfolding and revelation of the self – what Bruce Lee called honest self-expression – is the essence of all art. As Kevin likes to say, “Soul ain’t being; it’s becoming.” So, where many artists work to refine a single sound, Kevin chases any style that moves his spirit.

The result? A varied and enthralling repertoire linked together by a chain of constant exploration and inspiration.
